Something we will miss about this place, and definitely won't find in Texas, are delicious, fresh Maryland crabs. As South Carolina and Texas natives, WW and I did not pretend to know much anything about crabs before moving here. Luckily, we have been blessed with having these Maryland natives as two of our besties in DC:
In addition to being fabulous dinner hosts and chef extraordinaires, these two introduced us to the wonder that is the Maine Avenue Fish Market on the Southwest Waterfront.
This is the oldest continuously operating fish market in the US.
It is also an amazing way to spend a summer Saturday.
We had enjoyed fresh crabs from here at Casa de Caitrin and Chris...
Before
After
However, we had never made it out to the Waterfront ourselves. After this amazing meal (and kickoff to official "crab season") a few weeks ago, we decided it was time to hike out to Southwest DC ourselves and check it out.
I am so glad that we did.
There is really no way to describe this place. Endless stands of vendors line the wharf, selling live crabs that seem to have been plucked out of the Potomac an hour ago.
You pick out what you want, take them around the corner, and have them steamed and seasoned.
Or just buy some fried seafood to eat on the spot.
If you can handle the overwhelming aroma of fish, this is the perfect place to pick up a dozen crabs or a fresh filet for dinner.
WW and I are big fans of all things food... so this place was magical for us.
And eating lots more of these is definitely on the bucket list.
Happy Crab Season!

If squirming crustaceans aren't your thing, you can take home some of these guys:
